Create a printed tech zine that critically and creatively engages with course readings (Arreola, P., Gardner, C., & Lenz, M. (Eds.). (2024). Digital Art 1960s to Now. Thames & Hudson. ), synthesizing themes, debates, and personal reflections on digital culture. The zine will serve as a visual and textual archive of your intellectual journey through the course, and incorporate post-Internet aesthetics.

Coming into this project, I really wanted to create something that I could both relate to and can use to project my thoughts on digital culture. I knew I wanted to focus on the theme of cyberfeminist provocation since it was something that I had experienced before, and knew was dangerous in digital culture. I brainstormed alot, reflecting on the readings in class, and decided I was going to try a more poetic approach to the zine and my reflections on the readings.

I first started with planning my writing. I went through 7 different iterations before I was satisfied with the message I wanted to convey in my zine and how I wanted to convey it. There were little restrictions on the type of writing I had to include, hence, I was able to freely iterate on my writing and push out something that truly resonated with me.

From there, I hopped into Figma and began brainstorming different ideas on how to layout my zine. In class, we learnt many different ways of formatting zine pages, whether it be single page or a full spread, and from then, I was inspired to turn my zine into a critical art piece, including different works.

I ended up creating a 20-page zine, each page filled with designs and writing I felt could leave an impact on readers. The process taught me a lot about how to convey creative writing in ways that encourage people to think critically. I also vibe-coded a small interactive feature within the zine to create more engagement between the viewer and the work, another element I hoped would inspire reflection (click to check it out!).
